"Mr. Papagiorgio" is Maryland's newest millionaire after winning big on a 100X The Cash scratch-off ticket, which they celebrated with a game of golf after given the go ahead to take off from their boss.
What started as a routine day for the construction workers began with a Frederick man picking up iced coffee and doughnuts, while his Hagerstown coworker picked up some scratchers for them to play once they made their way into Virginia.
The Hagerstown man, who is known for his love of “payday scratcher Fridays,” said that he favors the higher-priced games, and picked up both of them $20 100X The Cash tickets.
He and his coworker from Frederick got into their work truck and took off, deciding to test their luck later that day.
“We pulled in and I said, ‘Let’s scratch these things,’” “Mr. Papagiorgio” recalls telling his coworker, Lottery officials said. “Let’s see if we can retire early.”
His scratcher was actually a dud; however, when he checked with his coworker, the very last number in the very last row matched a winning number for the $1 million top prize.
“He goes ghost white and said, ‘Did we win one million dollars?’” “Mr. Papagiorgio" told Lottery officials, adding that when they confirmed the win he reacted by pounding happily on the steering wheel and leaping out of the vehicle to shout with joy.
“I screamed ‘woo’ and some random guys were walking by and they screamed, ‘woo’ too!’”
Both men said that they then called their wives with the unexpected news, then one of their bosses, who were given permission to take off and the pair enjoyed a round of golf back home.
"Mr. Papagiorgio" who chose his monicker due to his love of the movie "Vegas Vacation" says he plans to set aside some of the cash for his retirement, while taking his wife on a honeymoon.
The Frederick winner plans to take his half to pay off some bills and set aside cash for his son's college fund.
